The rate of people hospitalized for metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases in general, especially vascular diseases is increasing.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Huu Uoc, Chairman of the Vietnam Vascular Disease Association, said that the proportion of elderly people with vascular diseases is increasing and tends to rejuvenate. In Vietnam, according to regulations, elderly people are people aged 60 or older. Economic development is accompanied by a gradually better investment in the health care system.
Meanwhile, our country’s aging rate is among the fastest in the world, and the proportion of Vietnamese elderly people is increasing. Therefore, the rate of elderly people hospitalized for metabolic disorders and cardiovascular diseases in general, especially vascular diseases, has also increased.

At the same time, young people in modern society often face work pressure, sedentary lifestyle, suffer from many metabolic disorders, obesity, atherosclerosis, and smoking habits, leading to an increasing risk of vascular disease, Associate Professor Uoc shared at the 3rd National Scientific Conference of the Vietnam Vascular Disease Association.
Many dangerous vascular diseases that can cause serious complications, requiring amputation, and even death, are determined to be related to age, gender, diseases related to metabolic disorders and other chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes or habits of smoking and drinking too much alcohol. These are diseases such as stenosis and occlusion of peripheral arteries, aortic aneurysm and dissection…

For example, with lower limb arterial disease, up to 20% of people over 70 years old will have this disease. Worldwide, about 200 million people have lower limb arterial disease (2015 data). In the United States, approximately 6.5 million people age 40 and older have lower extremity arterial disease. When the disease is in the late stage, the stage of severe lower limb anemia, 20% of patients have to have their limbs amputated.
According to Master, Doctor Le Nhat Tien, General Secretary of the Vietnam Vascular Disease Association, at the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center, Viet Duc Friendship Hospital (Hanoi), as well as many large cardiovascular centers across the country, every year, each hospital has about 400-800 elderly patients undergoing surgery and intervention to treat stenosis and occlusion of lower limb arteries. In particular, most cases of severe limb anemia are due to late detection, or incomplete treatment, leading to many cases requiring combined limb amputation after intervention or surgery.
Type A aortic dissection, an emergency cardiovascular disease, also tends to occur more and more in Vietnam due to increased cardiovascular disease related to high blood pressure and longevity. This is one of the main causes of sudden death in healthy people. Surgical treatment of this disease is considered the most complex, heavy and expensive of common cardiovascular surgeries. During the 3 years 2020-2022, at many large medical centers in the country, especially in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, over 500 cases of type A aortic dissection were surgically treated.
According to doctors, to prevent cardiovascular disease in general and vascular diseases in particular, people should perform many physical activities such as walking and light jogging; do not smoke, both actively and passively; Limit beer and alcohol. In particular, it is necessary to control high blood pressure, manage high blood cholesterol and diabetes.
From June 6-9, in Quang Ninh and Hanoi, the 3rd National Scientific Conference of Vietnam Vascular Disease Association combined with the 5th Quang Ninh Provincial Cardiology Conference took place, attracting nearly 1,000 delegates participating directly and online, experts from home and abroad, and members from many different specialties.
This year’s conference theme is “Vascular disease - Destination for specialties”, with the highlight being the first time a national association has combined with a provincial specialized association to co-host a large national conference.
During 4 days of scientific discussion sessions, over 160 reports both in person and online related to topics such as: aortic disease, peripheral artery disease, venous disease, visceral artery disease,… helped physicians nationwide as well as in Quang Ninh have the opportunity to update knowledge, new regimens, and the most advanced techniques in the care and treatment of vascular diseases.
